Road Trip to Omaha

Since graduation, my husband and I have been on what I like to call "adult summer vacation". We basically sleep in every morning, exercise, eat and drink whatever we want and try to go on daily adventures. It's pretty much as awesome as it sounds. I decided to take this time off in order to prepare for our move and just so the two of us could spend some quality time together before our lives go back to being crazy.

Last week we were in the mood for a road trip, and since we’ve heard so many great things about the Omaha Zoo since living in Des Moines, we decided to find out if they were true.

I can’t tell you the last time I visited a zoo but I couldn’t wait to start. It was wonderful getting to visit all of the animals and explore the different habitats. I swear I revert to being six years old again when we visit places like this. I get all wide eyed and fascinated by the animals. I drive my husband crazy because I need to stop at every informational site and read about what’s going on, absorbing all the information and random facts. Ha! I seriously could have been there until closing. I loved visiting the African Penguins who just happened to cohabitate with the giraffe. The butterfly exhibit was beautiful – a small vine video I made. The rhinos were out of this world. And I still can’t get over the gorilla exhibit. I don’t know why but thinking about the fact that those animals truly live in the wild is fascinating to me. I know it must sound ridiculous, but really, wow.

After hours of sightseeing we were both starving and as much as the fried zoo-food sounded good, I was really in the mood for something else. So, we decided to head into Omaha to grab a late lunch.

I had gotten a few recommendations from some friends before visiting. You have to understand something about me. I over prepare for everything. I don’t go anywhere without having at least 3-4 ideas of where we are going to eat. You see, nothing in the world irritates me more then wasting money on bad food. It is by far my biggest pet peeve. I cannot think of anything more irritating. So after evaluating the options, we decided on Amsterdam Falafel & Kabob. Oh, and I am glad we did. Those curry fries! Mmmmm…I am still dreaming about them. I will have to figure out a way to recreate them, for sure. I had the falafel with herb sauce and my husband had the kabob with spicy sauce. When we’re at new restaurants we always try to order as many different things as we can and then share. I’m the worst at deciding though. My husband is so patient with me, and typically I end up swapping with him or eating the other half of whatever he’s ordered. This was one fantastic lunch. It is definitely a must stop if you’re looking for somewhere great to eat while visiting Omaha.

After stuffing ourselves, we conveniently headed next door to Dundee Cork & Bottle for an afternoon libation. It was such a great way to wrap up our road trip, sitting outside on the patio chatting away about life and all that is to come.

It was a wonderful little adventure to Omaha for the day, definitely one of the highlights of this little summer vacation of ours. I certainly hope that we can get back again sometime soon because if this trip says anything there is certainly more to explore.
