Since moving to Milwaukee, we’ve been lucky enough to make some really amazing friends. Although we’re being budget conscious this year, I still wanted to be able to give them all a little holiday treat. We’ve been doing so much baking in preparation for the holidays. I thought it would be fitting to cook up a little gift from our kitchen.
I usually stick to the same cookie recipes around the holidays but I really wanted to try something new this year. I also really wanted the gift to represent a little bit of our new city. If you know anything about Milwaukee, you know that this city LOVES their pretzels. You can find them everywhere, which is fine with me because pretzels + anything = awesome, in my book. So, in my pursuit for the perfect “Milwaukee-style” holiday recipe, I read through the Land O’Lakes Holiday Brochure and found this Pretzel Toffee recipe. I knew it couldn’t be more fitting!
The caramel flavor of the toffee, combined with the saltiness of the pretzel, and the nice bittersweet richness of the chocolate makes for a seriously addicting treat. I actually ended up making a double batch because my husband couldn’t stop eating it. He had to head to Walmart for more butter, so we would have enough left for gifts.
The crunchy chocolate covered pretzels are already one of my weak spots, and I’d pretty much do anything for a soft and chewy caramel. All of these flavors bring together a wonderful holiday baking recipe that is easy to make and packages effortlessly for a lovely holiday gift.
Makes 40 Servings
6 ounces (4 cups) pretzel sticks
1 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/4 cups Land O Lakes® Butter
1 (12-ounce) package real semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 ounces white chocolate baking bar, curled
To Make Pretzel Toffee
Heat oven to 400ºF. Line 15x10x1-inch baking pan with aluminum foil; butter foil.
Place pretzels in single layer on pan.
Combine brown sugar and butter in medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat until mixture comes to a full boil. Continue cooking 2 minutes. Pour mixture over pretzels.
Bake 10 minutes. (Mixture may look foamy.) Remove from oven; sprinkle evenly with chocolate chips. Return to oven 1 minute to soften chocolate chips. Remove from oven. Gently spread chocolate over pretzels; cool 30 minutes. Sprinkle with white chocolate curls; cool completely.
Break or cut into pieces.
Tip: To make white chocolate curls, shave sides of white chocolate baking bar using vegetable peeler, letting curls or shavings fall onto waxed paper or paper towel.
