Good Food and Simple Hangouts


I’ve been quiet over here this week because we’ve been hosting some of our dearest friends from Des Moines, Zach and Emily. If you follow me via Instagram, you may have seen some of our (mostly food related) escapades. We decided to have a mid-week adventure in MKE after realizing our schedules coincidentally lined up. They made the trek over to the arctic tundra of Wisconsin and we’ve spent the last three days doing what we do best: laughing until our faces hurt, having deep and often silly conversations, and, of course, eating and drinking far too much.

Emily was actually one of the very first people I met when I moved to the Midwest. Her charming demeanor, welcoming presence and adorable style, are just some of the reasons I forced her to become friends with me. Emily’s probably one of the most delightful and generous people I’ve ever met. I’m fairly certain the girl doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. Anyway, Emily’s also a bit of a wordsmith and filled my heart with so much joy when she wrote this little tidbit about our friendship, “our bond was created over good food and simple hangouts, adventures and rambling conversations; I cannot image a better way to spend this trip than enjoying all the same.”


^^^For Zach and Emily’s visit, it seemed only natural that I put my baking skills to the test. I have had little experience with knead-based bread recipes, but since I had a hankering to get crazy in the kitchen, I decided to grab some beautiful in-season blood oranges and see what I could come up with. I swapped out the basic oranges in this Homemade Orange Sweet Roll recipe by Sally's Baking Addiction, and let me just say, that I don’t think our guests were too disappointed. I’m going to give myself a pat on the back for this one because these turned out far better than I could have ever expected.^^^

^^^We spent one of the days showing them around Milwaukee (mostly from the car since it was -25° outside) but made a few pit stop to give them a true Milwaukee experience. After grabbing some snacks at the Public Market, we headed over to The Wicked Hop so that they could indulge in a loaded-Milwaukee Bloody Mary. We then dashed to Clock Shadow Creamery for some cheese curds and Purple Door Ice Cream (yes, we still ate ice cream even though it was freezing outside because it's just THAT good). Before dinner, we stopped by Sugar Maple for a quick libation. And, we finished our day at La Merenda which may now be my favorite restaurant in Milwaukee after the incredible meal we had.^^^


^^^And because my friends and husband are awesome, they decided to indulge me and go sledding so I could cross it off my 30 before 30 list. We may have improvised and taken the tubs and a few of the lids from our storage unit since we couldn’t find an adequate sled but it was one of the most ridiculous and fun things I’ve done in ages.

 And now I will share a series of life-changing photos with you of our sledding adventure. Including one where Emily looks like she is having the best day of her life and I crush my sled landing in preparation for the Olympics.^^^

  2. This whole trip was perfection! And those sledding pics turned out awesome - I think you have a future in Olympic photography. Love to you and the mister - can't wait to get back up there!!!
